Maxim EverEarth Activity Walker

9 02 2010

Review

This is a great little walker. It’s sturdy enough that it doesn’t go too fast for beginning walkers (light plastic ones tend to ’shoot out’ causing your wee one to take a nose dive). It seems to be a “green” item, although it is made in china, which means you are riding on faith and hoping that EverEarth follows up to make sure the paints aren’t full of lead, etc. My 8 month old has been chewing on the stick for the xylophone and a little paint did scrape off, so I put that piece up high. The capacity for the paint to come off is probably why this toy is labeled 18 mo+. Overall a good toy though; it’s not noisy, it’s solid and the activities are fun for babies/toddlers. Also, assembly was easy, clear directions.

Feature

  • Ages 18 + months. Measures app.: 19″ x 12″ x 11″
  • Includes: Bead Maze, xylophone with Stick,, 4 pc animal puzzle, peg maze, gear tumblers, shape sorter and netted storage area on back.
  • Kid-safe, water-based, non-toxic paints
  • Eco-friendly, solid wood from renewable forests.
  • Packaging is made of attractive, environmentally friendly recycled materials

Baby Einstein Color Kaleidoscope

8 02 2010

Review

I got this for my child when he was 5 mo old and he was only interested for 1-2 minutes. However, I put it up and brought it back out when he was almost a year old and he LOVES it. Now that he can put his hands around it and actually pick it up himself, he likes it a whole lot more. We found that the toy was pretty heavy for a 3-6 month old, so for us it worked much better when the baby was a little older.

Feature

  • For 3-6 months can grasp handles to activate lights and melodies to develop eye tracking plus cause and effect learning
  • For 6-12 months can grasp a handle to see coordinating color light in the dome & hear the color in English, Spanish and French
  • 12 months+ can grasp two handles to hear the secondary color created when the two corresponding colors mix, plus see a light show with melodies
  • Music mode available for youngest babies
  • 3 months and above

Fisher-Price Interactive Baby Grand Piano

6 02 2010

Review

This piano is great. As others have mentioned, there are multiple different modes for your child to play in. One is music mode, in which the piano plays different songs when the keys are pressed, and as the song plays the keys light up in the order they should be played. I’m pretty sure it’ll be a long time until my son (only 6 months old right now) will appreciate this feature, but I think it’s pretty neat that it actually teaches the song. The songs are also written out on the pages that the child can turn, which is nice too. The second mode is learning mode, in which the child can press the keys to hear the number on the key (1-8), the color of the key, and a woman singing. You have to turn the pages in order to switch between these three options in the learning mode, which took me a minute to figure out since I bought it used and didn’t have directions or anything. The third mode simply allows the baby to press the keys and play. I agree with others, the sound the keys make when they are pressed is much nicer than others I have heard, especially the one I had as a child. However, I find the woman’s singing voice pretty annoying, so I rarely set it to singing mode. Of course my child doesn’t mind it, so I shouldn’t complain too much. Overall, it’s a great product, and my son loves to sit and press the buttons. I have a feeling that he will enjoy it even more when he is able to appreciate the other features it has to offer, as well as walk around it and play with the little toys on the back. Highly recommend it!

Feature

  • Learn about numbers, counting, opposites, colors, tempo, pitch, music styles, and more
  • A friendly dancing character comes to life as baby plays
  • There’s an interactive songbook with pages to flip, colorful light-up keys, charming sing-along songs, and lots of busy activities all around
  • Turn the dial for fun music and sounds
  • Features Learning, Musical Fun and Imagination modes

Overview

Little ones can rock out with their very own Baby Grand Piano! This pint-sized piano teaches numbers and colors, as well as exposes them to musical concepts like tempo, pitch and style. Baby is encouraged to play and learn with the eight light-up keys and four activities with four songs led by a dancing character and “magic” music book. Features three modes: Learning, Musical Fun and Imagination. Requires 3 “C” batteries (not included). Measures 19″ x 17″ x 17″. Adult assembly required.

Specifications

There’s nothing like watching small children fall in love with music. This baby grand will play Cupid to a toddler’s relationship to music. Just the right size for little fingers, with bright colors, lights, and familiar songs and learning concepts; kids will need no introduction before getting in there and starting to tickle those ivories! Three modes of play encourage children to enjoy music, learn basic concepts (alphabet, counting, opposites, etc.), or just play notes and chords on the eight-key keyboard. A plastic songbook (built into the piano) uses numerals on musical notation to teach aspiring musicians the correlation between the sounds they hear, the notes on the page, and the keys on the keyboard. Slides and buttons and dials can be manipulated to adjust tempo, pitch, and style, while a metronome keeps time. And a friendly maestro monster looms over the piano, dancing as your artiste creates composes her or his opuses. The music, as with so many children’s toys, is moderately unpleasant—nursery rhymes meet lounge jazz—but not the worst you’ll ever hear. And the joy toddlers will get out of playing their own melodies, as well as the potential for learning, far outweighs the burden of listening to cheesy tunes. Or you can just keep it in note-playing mode, and skip the pre-recorded tunes altogether! Three “C” batteries required (not included). Some adult assembly is required. –Emilie Coulter

Haba Walker Wagon

3 02 2010

Review

Great walker. Wanted a simple walker that did not require batteries or had a bunch of activities on it. We already have plenty of toys, so we just needed something sturdy to teach our 11 months old how to walk. He loves the walker and climbs all over it every day. It is very sturdy, he can pull himself up on the handle from the floor without it tipping over. Unfortunately he climbs onto the seat standing up and holding on to the handle but hasn’t fallen over as the walker is well balanced. The only slight drawback is that it doesn’t turn easily so I have to supervise and help him when he reaches an obstacle. Some reviewers wrote that the wheels squeak, and they do a little. It comes from the friction of the axels on the wood, but nothing bad that would prevent me from buying again if faced with the choice.

The price is a little high compared to all the plastic varietys on the market, but the nice thing is that the walker can be used as a “wagon” long beyond him being able to walk. In fact our 4 year old is also loving it and pushing the little one around in it. Shipping was swift and the walker came fully assembled except the handle was folded forward for shipping so it had to be pushed back and top screw tightened. It took about 5 minutes (wich included getting the wrench). Ultimately I based my decision for buying the Haba walker over other wood products on my prior experiences with toys from this company. They are safe (paint, construction) and always very well made.

Feature

  • The walker wagon aids children in moving.
  • The seat allows brother and sister to ride along.
  • Beyond the seat there is sufficient place to store utensils.
  • Sturdy construction, rubber tires on wooden rims.

123 Activity Playmat

30 01 2010

Review

Feature

  • Age: 0+
  • Materials: cotton velour
  • Measurements: 30 x 30 inches
  • Care: surface wash, do not bleach or dry clean, air dry, iron with low heat
  • Designed in France

Overview

This may very well be one of the best playmats we’ve come across! The surface is covered with different activities to stimulate baby’s senses. Crinkle paper waits to be discovered in the pink and red balloons and orange patches. Squeakers wait to be pushed in the yummy soft heart and purple balloon. Mint green loops wait to be pulled. A small foil mirror awaits baby’s curious gaze. And that’s just for tummy time! When baby wants to be on her back let her try to grasp one of the four removable toys. A heart book number 2 and squeaking cake hang tantalizingly from the fabric-covered arch. We love the bright saturated colors and thoughtful activities for non-mobile babies. We’re also big fans of the variety of activities and textures on the mats surface and the ultra thick padding in the mat. That it is machine washable is a big big plus! Made of mixed cotton/polyester fabrics with foam filling. Wash in cold water and hang dry or tumble dry on coolest lowest setting. Hanging toys are attached via small pads of velcro. Can be folded in half with arches attached. Arches remove via a hidden plastic snap when it’s time to wash the mat.

Fisher Price Brilliant Basics Activity Walker

28 01 2010

Review

My husband rarely cares about reviews, but he read the review with me when there was only one review for this (5-star at the time) and was sold on buying it. At first, I have to admit that I was disappointed when I unpacked it. It is very lightweight; it’s all pretty thin plastic – on the whole toy. The picture made it seem like the part with the ‘toys’ on it was heavy enough to weigh the whole thing down. It’s pretty much just a shell, with a few gadgets attached.

When we bought it our child was about 7 months old, and loved crawling. When we tried the walker, our son really needed to put his weight on whatever was holding him up when he wanted to practice walking. So, when we first tried the walker with him, it would have toppled right over (with him) if both us hadn’t either been holding our son or the toy. It’s definitely not made to be heavily leaned upon by someone with wobbly legs.

We helped our son practice using the walker practically all the time, even though I thought the toy was far too light to ever be a support. It actually became useful in stages. At first, our son was increasingly able to hold his own weight, standing, which is what made the walker increasingly usable. The walker was a little more useful when he could stand well, but the ‘toys’ on it were totally uninteresting. (At least it’s a quiet toy that doesn’t need batteries.) Then, he could pretty much take one or two steps with the walker, on his own. Finally, one evening he just crawled to the walker and ran down the hall with it. It was quite a shock because when he pulled himself up, I thought he was going to fall over with the toy. (We’d always held the toy steady for him, up to that point.) I was only a few feet away watching him before I realized he wanted to stand up, but by the time I got up and took two steps to go help him, he’d already started running down the hall with it. (After I recovered my jaw, I woke my husband to see the surprise.)

I’d say if you’re interested in just getting something to help your child transition to walking on his/her own, this toy serves its purpose. Your child should probably be steady on his/her feet, meaning pretty much able to stand steadily. Early on, when he’d adjusted to using it, my husband and I still spent a lot of time holding the toy with him because his leaning on it made it roll quite quickly (the wheels are just as thin and lightweight as the rest of the toy.)

If you’re like I was, and are looking for a walker that can double as a toy for a baby to play with while sitting, get something else. (I didn’t invest much time looking into walkers because we have no stairs to worry about and have mostly carpet floors; so I can’t make a specific, alternative suggestion.) It works very well on carpet, by the way. Regular floors, keep an eye on the little one driving.

Personally, I’d hoped it would be a multi-purpose toy (based on the picture), having little things on top of it to play with, but the widgets just flip like pages or spin. In the end, though, our son didn’t really need us to invest a lot in a walker because the transition was about a month or two, then he wanted to take steps on his own and didn’t want the toy to help him anymore. He pretty much stopped using it after he started practicing on his own.

We bought this when it was about , I think. (I’d spent so much on other toys I didn’t have much left to invest in a walker at the time.) In hindsight, I’m glad I didn’t spend a lot on this kind of toy. Really, it’s not necessary to spend more than on a push walker anyway. I definitely wouldn’t buy this particular walker for more than or . By the time children get the hang of walking with the help of a toy, they will probably just want to try walking on their own, one step at a time.

By the way, I rated this toy 5 stars because my husband specifically asked me to write a review for this (of all the toys I bought on Amazon) and to rate it 5 stars. I love him, he thought the toy was great, and my son’s a champion at walking now, so, here’s 5 stars. Cheers.
